Before the visit

Kissimmee
Explore the services for your property and confirm your address when you call.
The City of Kissimmee's permitting notice describes the state law in effect from 1 July 2026 as removing the permit requirement for a narrow set of small, non-trade home projects, and states that electrical, plumbing, mechanical or gas work needs a permit with no exceptions. The exemption route applies only under $7,500 and outside a flood zone, and an approved form is kept on site for the duration of the work. Osceola County permits addresses outside the Kissimmee and St. Cloud city limits, so a Kissimmee address is handled by the city. Confirm which applies before lock, door-hardware and entry-security work begins.
Source for planning your work ↗Florida's building-permit exemption for single-family work valued at $7,500 or less does not apply to property partly or wholly inside a flood hazard area as defined by the Florida Building Code. Parts of the Kissimmee area sit in mapped flood hazard areas, so whether lock, door-hardware and entry-security work could use that route depends on the address as well as the value and trade involved. Ask the city building department to confirm the flood designation for the property rather than assuming it from the neighbourhood.
Source for local exposure ↗Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation runs a public licence search covering the professions and businesses the department regulates. If a provider quotes a state licence number for security or electrical work, the number can be checked there — and it is fair to ask what the licence actually covers, since the search only reflects professions DBPR regulates. Local registration and insurance are separate questions worth asking about as well.
Source for local context ↗Area-wide context is not a finding about your own property.
Before you decide
Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible lock while keeping the main hardware. Replacement changes the hardware itself. Ask whether the current lock is in suitable condition, whether keys are missing and whether you want a different function or finish. Those details are more useful than choosing a service from the symptom alone.
Describe the door or vehicle, the lock type if known, and whether the key is lost, broken or turning without opening. Have the information needed to establish authorization to access the property ready. For vehicle work, the make, model and year help identify compatibility; confirm the exact requirements with the provider.
Compatibility depends on the door preparation, thickness, existing hardware and the product’s requirements. Ask whether the proposed lock fits the current holes, how it is powered and what access remains available if the battery or connection fails. A photograph can help a preliminary conversation, but installation fit still needs confirmation.
Ask what the visit includes, which parts are included, and whether opening, rekeying or replacement are separate items. The provider should explain any work that would change the original scope before proceeding. Keep the invoice and the details of the fitted hardware for future key or maintenance questions.
The cylinder is only one part of the door assembly. Door alignment, the latch, strike plate and closer can affect operation. Explain whether the problem changes when the door is open or closed, without forcing the hardware, so the assessment can consider the door as well as the key mechanism.
